Stories from the Road- by Danielle Huber

Five months ago, long-time supporters of Tolosa and owners of Sheila’s Wine Bar and Restaurant in Camarillo, Pablo and Bertha Medina, visited Tolosa Winery.  Pablo and Bertha made quite an impression on me.

Now, I am not materialistic by any means, but what struck me was the generosity within the hearts of these warm and beautiful people.  Bertha, Pablo’s wife, was wearing the most attractive pave set ring with a lime green stone.  And I told her so!

Before they left Tolosa’s tasting room, Bertha took the ring off her hand and put it on mine.  “If it fits,” she said, “you have to keep it.”  It did fit, and uneasily I kept it.  Who today pulls a ring off of their finger and hands it to you?!  “It will bring you luck!” both she and her exuberant husband told me. “Really??” I thought.  Still in disbelief, I could hardly imagine.

Well luck it brought…

Two weeks later, I was offered a position to sell full time with Tolosa Winery’s outside sales team in the South Central Coast. In my five year history at Tolosa, I couldn’t have dreamed up this role.  I was the tasting room girl and tour-guide on busy Saturdays.  I was the front door girl at the pickup parties…the one who carefully remembers our wine club members.  But outside sales for Tolosa?  Really?  Me?

My new role for Tolosa is to leave my friends and seemingly “family” in the tasting room and be an ambassador on the streets.  Taking Tolosa to restaurants and stores NEAR YOU that may or may not know how amazing these wines are.  There is work to be done!  I couldn’t have had a better training ground…and I certainly couldn’t muster more enthusiasm for this unique brand!  Thank you to all who have known me along the way!

FULL CIRCLE:

Two days ago I visited Pablo and Bertha at Sheila’s Wine Bar in Camarillo…my newest restaurant account!  What a truly meaningful experience.

The moral of the story is that ordinary people can motivate one’s life in absolutely extraordinary ways.  The story of generosity doesn’t really end with Bertha Medina of Sheila’s Wine Bar.  I promise to write more from the road, so stay tuned.  But remember this…

Wine is the medium that bridges many hearts.  Be open to what it tells you.  And remember to pay it forward!

Updates from “The Road” soon…!

Best,
Danielle Huber

Carmel Winemaker Dinner

Monday, January 10th, 2011

One of the burdens and privileges of being the winemaker is the institution of winemaker dinners. Depending on the restaurant and organizers these can range in pleasure from something close to combat or dinner with the in-laws, all the way up to one of the nicest evenings you’ve ever spent. This past Friday I drove up to Carmel for a Wino dinner at Le St. Tropez. Wino is an organization started by Jerry Mead many years ago, and I believe that the Carmel group has been meeting for close to 30 years, (here’s a link to their website). Carmel is a cute and pricey little town as I learned from the shockingly expensive $18 martini I had pre dinner, but I tried not to let that minor sticker shock upset my evening.

The restaurant was packed to the gills with 70 people attending. The cuisine, as you can tell from the name is in a southern French style. We began the evening with passed appetizers and the ’08 No Oak Chardonnay. The first course was an endive salad paired against our ’08 Estate Chardonnay. While I am normally very leery of salads and wine pairings I have to say hats off to the chef in this case as it was a truly lovely combination. Another notable hit was the duck cassoulet with the ’07 Syrah. I also brought up from the winery a case of the Legacy Viognier dessert wine. I particularly liked that the chef knew to serve it as a course of its own after the dessert which was a sorbet in pastry. Most dessert wines don’t really pair with dessert they’re much nicer savored by themselves afterwards. The crowd was an informed and knowledgeable one and it was stimulating both to give the general descriptions of the wines as well as the more detailed individual discussions at the tables. My hotel was a few blocks away within easy walking distance so I was able to enjoy the many glasses of wine and an after dinner Cognac with relative impunity.

Tolosa on the Road Modesto

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

Tolosa On the Road hit Modesto last week, with full force! Accompanied by Mr. Scott Olsen, our Go-To Guy for distributing to the upper Central Valley, I poured at Sips Bistro from 5pm-7pm. Sips has a great selection of California and French wines, as Bill the owner is an avid collector. Currently, Bill has some previous vintages as well as our new releases in his store. The favorite for the evening was the 2007 Pinot Noir. Hurry to grab some before Bill runs out!

Cheers,

Tolosa on the Road- Fresno

Friday, September 24th, 2010

This week, Tolosa On The Road hit Campagnia Restaurant in Fresno. Campagnia must be a hip place, because 85 Fresno-nians showed up! I took along Danielle from the Tasting Room, and it was an absolute success. Thank you to all the wine club members who brought their friends and shared a glass. The most loved wine? Our 2007 Chardonnay!

Want Tolosa to come to you? Let me know at holly@tolosawinery.com

Cheers!

San Diego – Tolosa On the Road

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Last Tuesday, I once again braved the freeways of Southern California to bring Tolosa wine to you. This time, our notorious San Diego representative, Mr. Kie Wilcox, joined me as I poured at Twenty/20 Grill & Wine Bar in Carlsbad. On Wednesday, I joined Kie as he hosted a wine dinner at Firefly Grill & Wine Bar in Encinitas. It was truly an honor to see all the support from our club members. As of yet, we had more guests in Carlsbad at Twenty/20 than any other Tolosa on the Road event! Over 70 wine lovers watched the summer sunset over North County San Diego with Tolosa in their glass.

On Wednesday at Firefly, loyal club members and one of our owners, Bob Schiebelhut, enjoyed a formal five course dinner paired with our Rose, No Oak Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Kie and Bob gave guests a little history of Tolosa and our estate wines. A big thanks to Jim at Firefly and Reed at Twenty/20!

Coming soon to a restaurant near you,
