Edna Ranch Moutainside

Edna Ranch Moutainside Vineyards, Tolosa Pinot Noir & Chardonnay

We have the majority of our best blocks of Pinot and Chardonnay in the Edna Ranch Mountainside estate. Here are a few blocks that Tolosa utilizes and their characteristics.
Block 569 Chardonnay - a unique location in a tiny side valley on the south end of the vineyard. It is own rooted. The soil is a gravelly clay loam with some sandy sections. The soil is light in color. This was the first block planted on the ranch.
Blocks 590,591, and 599 - all Chardonnay - these blocks are on the lower slopes and are typified by sandy soils. These lighter or so called warmer soils result in earlier ripening which is a strong quality advantage in Chardonnay.
Block 567 - Chardonnay - a long narrow block on the top of this ranch it has gravelly clay loam soil with a serpentine subsoil that limits the growth of the vines. This is the same soil type that most of the best Pinot on this ranch is grown on.
In most years these Chardonnay blocks listed above produce 80-90% of our Chardonnay.
Blocks 593,595,596 & 597 - Pinot Noir These blocks which stretch along the hills are the heart of our Pinot Noir wines. The soils in general are clay loam mixed with gravel that are underlain with serpentine which limits their growth. Yields are consistently low in these blocks which also helps quality. These blocks are 50-75% of our Pinot bottlings most years and consistently provide wines for our reserves as well.
Block 592 - Syrah - this is a tiny block that abuts block 593 Pinot but has very different soils. They are sandy like the Chardonnay blocks and cause this block to ripen earlier than most of our other Syrah blocks.
