Spring in the Vineyard: What’s Happening at Tolosa This Time of Year?
Spring in Edna Valley is one of the most exciting times in the vineyard. At Tolosa Winery, the season marks the beginning of a new growing cycle as the vines awaken from dormancy and the landscape comes alive with vibrant green growth.
As a SIP Certified winery, spring is a critical time for nurturing vineyard health, promoting biodiversity, and setting the foundation for another exceptional vintage.
Budbreak: The Vineyard Awakens
One of the first signs of spring is budbreak, when tiny green shoots begin emerging from the vines after months of winter dormancy. This stage signals the start of the growing season and sets the pace for the months ahead.
The timing of budbreak is especially important in Edna Valley’s cool-climate environment, where coastal influences help preserve freshness and balance in our Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Vineyard Growth and Canopy Management
As the vineyard begins to grow rapidly, our team carefully manages the vine canopy to encourage healthy development and balanced fruit production. Early spring work includes shoot thinning, trellis positioning, and continued soil monitoring to support long-term vine health.
Cover crops including a mix of grasses (rye, oats and fescue) are planted throughout the vineyard continue to play an important role by improving soil quality, encouraging beneficial insects, and supporting biodiversity. Tolosa also plants clover and vetch for nitrogen fixing as well as some flowering strips. These are all key components of our SIP Certified farming practices.
Flowering and the Promise of a New Vintage
Late spring brings flowering, one of the most delicate and important stages of the vine’s lifecycle. Small clusters begin to form, giving an early glimpse into the potential size and quality of the upcoming harvest.
Every detail matters during this stage, as weather conditions and vineyard balance help shape the character of the wines that will eventually fill the bottle.
Life in the Cellar
While the vineyard bursts into new life outside, the cellar remains focused on the wines from previous vintages. Our wines continue aging in barrel, slowly gaining complexity, texture, and depth before release.
Spring is a season where both the vineyard and cellar are filled with energy, anticipation, and preparation for the months ahead.
